Scoping Out Your Idea
The following questions provide examples of the topics for each area in the Idea Scoping Tool.
You can adjust these to reflect your specific idea.
1) Design What type of idea have you created? A software application, a physical
device, a diagnostic tool, etc.? What are its key design elements?
2) Attributes Is it an extension to an existing product, a feature enhancement, a

Do you know for certain that this idea is technically possible?
Do you have a proof of concept?
Do you have a working prototype?
Have the scientific and technical claims been reviewed by your peers?
Have you engaged with any early customers?
Is this entirely your idea? Does anyone else have a potential claim to
ownership?
Are regulatory approvals required?
Are you aware of anyone else currently working on an idea like this?
Have you taken any steps to protect your intellectual property (IP) or
trade secrets?
Have you filed a provisional patent?
